artistic related of work dun make much... unless u are reputable or u work for a reputable company..
web designers mostly freelance i guess... not too sure unless co recruiting inhouse intranet designers... but most co will use existing staff and not hire... Last time i work in a advertising firm's accounts.. The artists there draw around $2 to 3k but these days cld be higher cos if u design the web,.. u probably have to double up as sales spokesman as well. Animator ?... hmmm dunno much... mb ur post shld be in Animes section.

macromedia flash is a special tool itself that can create lots of wonders, not just electronic media design.
web designers nowadays are also having headaches with cut-throat freelance rates and low paying jobs. i just went to a graduate show and i was told now the market rate fell almost 50% off the excellent starting pay rate a few years back. maybe less than 1.4k....can be as low as 1k....n become a sotong must handle admin, sales etc. my impression of freelance is that i take very long to get my money. sometimes for a mere few hundred i waited 6-9 months. be sure that this is your passion. coz when times are bad...its ur passion that makes u stay on track. many of my friends have turned to teaching digital art for a living. imagine the industry out there... ![]() |

very seldom pple empoly for web desigining only. They not only want u to design, sometimes they will want u to develop a database for them and even better, set up network archietacture.
like u, i wanted to be a web designer too. However, i didnt take up flash and i was trained to develop databases and wed development. For designing part, i learn some basic bout flash nia.

last time i oso ever dreamt of becoming a fashion designer...then oso tot abt it then changed to study multimedia...
tho' the design industry is slowly picking up, with sg recognizing the arts and mda promoting all those stuffs...u are still expected to bao kao liao at ur design job. this is sg, not places like US, Aust...where they really have an attitude abt design. i got a fren who recently quit her job to study fashion design. its her intuition that she followed...after analyzing her quarter life crisis. u cant get two good things at one go....either money or for the sake of art. unless u are fated to be damm lucky =P |

the design houses will sure stress u like mad, thats for sure. unless u are also another hardcore one.
but expected to stick by it even u dun get to go home when u rush for projects overnight. my own experience, go for GLCs..or even civil service or teaching Digital Art...at least the pace is not that xiao and u dun get burn out easily. even my lect last time admitted that he couldnt find similar jobs in sg so end up teaching in poly. not to paint an ugly picture, but this is what the situation is...u must stick to your guns. |

GLC = Govt-linked companies
anyway, you might want to consider your qualifications first. What nature is your field of study? Multimedia or graphics design? What are the software you are specialised in? I am a web designer-cum-developer. Meaning doing web designing for the look and feel of the website and also doing web applications for the website. My software skills include Adobe Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks etc for designing portion.....as for the developing part, skills include asp, html, dhtml, javascript, vbscripts, sql, ms access database etc... Seems like you are a fresh grad....so your qualifications will have to be at least presentable in order to grant you interviews and have to be backed up by a strong portfolio. if you intend to be a web designer, you must have at least a good portfolio, some programming knowledge and the ability to pick up new software fast enuff. Even for the flash designing, you also need to be equipped with the action scripting knowledge... as for 3D animator, in singapore market, it will be quite tough to get a job in 3D animations as firstly the demands are small, you will need to compete with those who are in this market with strong portfolio and experience. besides this, there are also not many job openings with this specialisation. Usually, there will be a combination of skillsets required like 3D animations with Open GL programming for games development, or 3D animations with advertising knowledge etc.... define your passion in these 2 fields, which one appeals to you more...a web designer (without programming skills) can only command a starting salary of $1k onwards....while a 3D animator can command a starting pay of $1.5k onwards...all depends on your experience and portfolio.
