History would seem to indicate that Duke Friedrich II chose the red-white-red banner for Austria in 1230, but legend has it that in 1191 at the Battle of Ptolemais Duke Leopold V's used his bloodied tunic with a white band (the part covered by his belt) to rally troops to victory.

Called hinomaru in Japanese, the national flag of Japan has been used for over 1000 years. It was adopted as the official flag of Imperial Japan following the Meiji Restoration in 1870, and the 'rising sun' has flown proudly over the country ever since.
