Read this... frightening isn't it? I hear that sometimes & tot my neighbour dropped screws!! Even my colleagues hear it. And it's always at nite, any science explanation on some chemical reastion or watsoever??

Something from a fren.. Don't know how true.

Do u stay in a HDB flat? If yes, do u ever hear marbles dropping late at night from upstairs? Have u ever wondered why occasionally now and then, u hear marbles
dropping? It could be children playing marbles, but in this century when they got ps1, ps2 xbox, they play with marbles in the middle of the night? Or shift furniture in the middle of the night? Sometimes I wonder, asked alot of my friends and they all heard the same things in their flats occasionally....

When HDB started building flats, they put marbles in between the floor so as to let 'them' play and that they won't disturb the occupants..... otherwise u really think that children playing marbles upstair, u can hear it downstair in yr flat meh? If so, I switch on hifi or tv, my neighbours downstairs also can hear lor....

Okae, not sure abt hearing hifi and TV and stuffs like tt.. duno how true but I do hear something like marbles dropping in the middle of the night...

i am not the expert here but to put it in a scientific way...

our brain emits brain waves rite...

we take all these supernatural things as 'energy' or waves...

in normal circumstances the frequency of the 2 waves should not match...

but at a time when u r feeling very stress or nervous your brain starts to emit waves tat r of the same frequency as those 'things'....

so this will affect your brain n you will start 'seeing' n 'hearing' things tat r not supposed to be there....

as we grow older our mind becomes more complex n the brain waves we emitted becomes more complicated thus our chances of hearing or seeing this kind of thing decreases...

tats y kids have higher tendency to see these kind of 'things'...

do u all feel more assured now...

could be... cos environment can affect your brain frequency...
tat could be how illusionist trick his audience...
anyway our brain frequency is like our fingerprint everyone is unique n different....
if they is something that can alter our brain wave to the same frequency we can well be 'possessed' or can do telepathy liao loh

I've heard of this before myself.
Although I don quite accept the fact, here's the debunk...

http://www.spi-world.com/spi/forum/003/main.htm

I still believe that I heard the furniture and constant "renovation" plus the marbles.. sometimes 1 sometime a bagful of it... :blah:

Mathwizard

does it only happens to kid?
Maybe it's because kids really believe what adults told them. They believe that their ear will really be cut, hence the body react to the belief and produce the mark. It is well known that human mind is capable of producing scar on the body.

OK...back to the topic...I only heard marble dropping once in my room in NUS, most probably someone did dropped something on the floor above me. But at that time I jumped up and reached for my gadgets to scan the ceiling :wahaha: :wahaha: :wahaha:

A more mysterious event happened many years back during my secondary school time in Malaysia. It was late at night and my mother woke me up, asked me whether I can heard the sound. I said yes. It sounds like someone is banging on the door of my down stair neighbour's bedroom door  I continued to sleep though :D My mother told me that the sound continued for two hours...and apparently our neighbour didn't hear it. Whether it is something supernatural I cannot say for sure.

ermm think i can explain the marble thing...
read on some site and books on it b4....
this onli happen on older blocks...
cause when building the put ball bearing on the side and on the ceiling..
WHY?
i remembered they say cause the building tends to sway from left to right..
or the soil below soften.. like some building grow shorter or taller after years
its ti prevent the building from collesp....
so at nite the air is cooling....
the building tend to shrink on 1 side....
than the so called "marble" will row from 1 side to another....
thats why got the sound....

i heard those marble like sounds and furniture creaking or move sounds before too! but then i don't think it's anything supernatural lah..perhaps coincidental people drop something.. maybe not marble but definitely will still bounce awhile sometimes.

those sounds may not be on top of your house as sounds can travel thru those walls or floors or ceilings and they could be echos from some other floors in the building lor..i am not surprise..

i got all those info from a friend but dunno how true though since so many of you said it is ball bearings in the ceiling? or maybe SPI agent can comment? :)

It could be both a natural or a supernatural event. Depending on how one perceives it.
Sometimes we give ourselves too many reasons and explanations to hide the fear of truth..
Seeing is believing.. but how can you see when you don believe/doubt it?

okie.... the marble and furniture sound thing...

its alike wat u wld hear in ships too... but those in ships, more scary... coz will like hav clanking sounds, someone/something moaning sound, banging sound, and furniture moving sound... caused by uneven expansion and contraction that results in metal pieces or other things 'rubbing against each other...

oso, take another scenaro... the cracking sound of old door hinge... if u open it really really slowly, it does sound like marble bouncing...

how that for a thought?;)

I am no expert about this stuff but i heard somebody mentioned that the marbles are actually placed in the ceilings right in the middle. So when they sound means something is passing through the concrete floors. This very common in Singapore and also hong kong as most of the buildings are highrise. We are not alone.

IMO,its because during the night the weather is cooler, then the concrete contract la.. thats y got the sound.

Well... from what i know... and from what i had study for the past three years... maybe older HDB do put in ball bearing for expansion and contraction on concrete(Do they?? Gotta check this out from my lecturer tomolo.)
But for newer HDB flat, they adopt a new building method call prefabrication. It is casting of building component before erecting all the structure together to form a building. I dun think they will still put in ball-bearing.... for what reason do they place since they do welding at connection point of components??
Interesting to know if newer HDB have this problem.. msg me if hav... may wanna do some research on this..
Btw, anyone hav sighting with the guardian from hell... chinese call Hei Bai Wu Chang??

Remember the story on the marbles rolling across the celing of our HDB houses? Think we all must have heard it at least once in our lifetime.......

Well, my sister's fren was pretty freaked out with the "marble rolling across the ceiling" story, so she decided to get the truth for herself. She went to ask a few of her contractor/architect frens and found out that in between floors, there are ball bearings. The reason why they are put there, is for a very simple reason...... to allow for expansion when the concrete is hot and to contract when it is cool, to prevent cracks!! Just like the MRT tracks and expressways!! Thus the reason why we hear it at night, cos the concrete moves along with the ball bearings as it contracts to the cooler temperature of the night.

Interesting eh? Now we all dun feel so scared sleeping at night and hearing those "marbles"!!

hrmz? true nt?

i am not the expert here but to put it in a scientific way...

our brain emits brain waves rite...

we take all these supernatural things as 'energy' or waves...

in normal circumstances the frequency of the 2 waves should not match...

but at a time when u r feeling very stress or nervous your brain starts to emit waves tat r of the same frequency as those 'things'....

so this will affect your brain n you will start 'seeing' n 'hearing' things tat r not supposed to be there....

as we grow older our mind becomes more complex n the brain waves we emitted becomes more complicated thus our chances of hearing or seeing this kind of thing decreases...

tats y kids have higher tendency to see these kind of 'things'...

do u all feel more assured now...
well....wad if my whole family heard the marbles n draggin of furniture?

j20_sg...Dun be scared..I will use the scientific way to explain..hope it will soothen your fear

Just to let you know..building are make of cement concrete, sand, granite, clay and some other miscellanous material. As a tropical country near the equator, we experience much more heat gain and heat loss than any other countries like thailand and japan..

as you learned science in lower primary, there are expansion and contraction due to heat gain and heat loss, same goes to a building... ;)

especially when you say marble,do you know that the interaction sound of the marble is as similar to the interaction sound of the granite..inside the building there are granite to hold the hardened cement mixture stronger (that's wat i had learned in my course of study now...)..without it,the building is not strong and would be in danger of collapse easily as year goes by..

if you notice, granite absorb heat easily and the emit heat easily..yet the have slight expansion and contraction..the other stuff like sand and hardened cement mixture with also absorb and emit heat..thus causing some sound to be produced...so that's y you hear sound within building...

(*should there b any building expertise here, pls help me elaborate..I have limited knowledge and that's all I can provide to clear away doubts on huanted building where it is just mere expansion and contraction)

Anything is furniture..i believe it is also due to expansion and contraction..

But I dun forgo the doubt that some people used psychic to move things..there are cases that even normal people like us can shift things easily without our knowledge..as long as your mental state is in a tranquility and you have very strong brainwave at a moment...it is easily to perform some act which we called it as miracles...paranormal scientist are still researching to produce a hard solid thesis for every1..but of course they have obtained some result liao...

hope my explaination have given you more understanding and cleared away your doubts and fear... ;)

Then my downstairs neighbour come to my house and yell at us, say we drag the furnitures.
then when he stand infront of my house (obviously we didnt do anything) the noise came and his face turned green. After that he moved!

Yah.. suddenly the bearing theory reminds me...i lefted out some details :p
HDB dun put bearing into building..as singapore is not a earthquake prone zone..
for earthquake-prone zone like Japan and Taiwan, building usually they put bearing..
and for info:building do moves..but their movement is very hard to traces by human eyes..
this are all the answer after consultation with my lecturers and some of them are the things that i learned in class.. ;)

Okae, not sure abt hearing hifi and TV and stuffs like tt.. duno how true but I do hear something like marbles dropping in the middle of the night...

piangz!! last time i live in AMK i ALWAYZ hear it!!!! ARGH!!! i used to live in blk 561.. low floor... alwayz hear the marbles dropping sound ar!!! but den i moved to bishan now.. i live top floor now (24) so i dun tink i can hear the marbles sound liaoz... =) heng ar...

and as for the ball bearings theory... eh the sound is like marbles being dropped from a height (you shld noe wat i mean).. not the rolling sound.. so cannot b the bearingz??

Hi people. Did anyone of you wonder if it ball bearings between the floors or really those things playing, why we never hear any sounds from our floor? Why only the ceiling/roof?

abc123
10-06-2004, 11:19 AM
because even small insects when running about on the roof can have it's sound resonated by the hollow space and further magnified by the wood supports that's why you always hear weird stuff from the roof, even the natural bioderading of the wood can make some houling sound

Not sure if the ball bearing hypothesis is believable. But it is possible that expansion in day time and contraction in night time works such that it only makes sound at night. Or maybe it does make sound at day time but daytime is usually noisy enough all sorts of sound and we may not notice it. Not sure. LOL

I heard there is a saying there are marbles specially for the "xiao gui". So that the building would be stronger. Also, I heard that when Sheares Bridge was being built, lots of children have gone missing during that period. The saying was implying the lost children were killed:nervous: and their bones used to build the bridge, as it was believed their bones would make bridges stronger. :nervous:
Anyone heard this before?

tot that time ST Times clarify on the marble sound liao?

it's caused by the distortion of the sound made by water flowing in pipes all over the building..since the building is solid, and sound travel fastest in solid, the sound might not even come from upstairs..might be from anywhere in the block..

hey guys, i think this issue was mentioned before not long ago by SPI. they said they went to check out the source for this marble sound and found out that it was actually due to the water pipes(as in if somebody upstairs washed their hands/flush toilets). i cant really remembered why the pipes will cause this kinda sound, but i'm sure that i did see this article on straits time regarding this. it was certified by SPI it wasnt those 'things'
so dun worry!!

Scary. Has anybody besides you experienced the sounds? Try visiting the temple and ask around.

They are not marbles, normally in new hdb flats nowadays, these sounds would not appear.

This is because in older hdb flats, they have water pipes located very near to the cement surface or something. Thus, when someone in your apartment turns on the water tap, the gushing pressure from the tank will make the pipe hit the wall vigourously producing the "Marble Sound" you have described.

So please do not worry, there are not any "baby ghost" above your house playing marbles or whatever.
