hmm.. sharing info...

last saturday, intend to change my nokia 6610 to samsung S200 but.. haa cant seems to find the White version anywhere... so.. got recommend and bought the SAMSUNG S500.. so sharing wif u people some info on it.. for those interested in getting it.


first of all... i can say its almost the same specs as S200 & S300
and oso NO MMS... well i dun nit tat lor.. cos waste of money ...
no Camera.. tis oso dun nit.. if wan camera might as well buy digicam...keke

size-wise, hmm.. slimmer than S300 cos the external screen panel is flatten down... looks more nicer... and designed like E700 except for the antenna... but the truth is ... wif antenna reception is better.. not tat long lor...

hmm.. but tis package.. i bought never comes with CD(software) and datacable.
but you can download the EasyStudio(cant remember) software from the samsung website... and can transfer MMF format ringtone and IMAGE(jpg & bmp) format using the IRDA port.

as for animated images (i duno if S200 & S300) support animated images as wallpaper, the software have an editor so u can import images and save as *.ahn format.. but tat animated ones, i tink need to go thru wap to download.. cos the software no SUPPORT.. haiz..

ok lah.. this phone is consider middleclass lor.. although the external panel is Black and White, so i mean why u need 256 color for external while u can change the bg unless u flash the software etc.

hmm... use 2 days liao.. still no regret changing from nokia 6610 to S500...
another ting is ... S500 is new so... u dun really need to bother .. how long ago .. phone like S200 & S300 is produce.. u c.... somemore... TFT... power display...

i think it is depend on the size of the pics and tones, and the memory is fixed, not share, u may get a memory full for pic but your tone still can add up few more...
samsung, for what i know is caller groups, i think 7 or 8 groups,... sms tone also can assign to groups....

S300 and S200 can use GIF file as wallpapers, animated..

as for how many pic n ringtone... inside got around 12 ringtone n about 8 images (no explore so much) as i always create my own to put so.. i only need ONE slot for my pic n tone.. keke

so when u download to the phone, u replace the existing ones lor... so ... i dun tink anyone will need so many slot rite.. hehe

oops forgot to tell u people one thing,... on saturday.. strait times etc, i believe it was advertise $438 by M1 if u sign up a new line/upgrade, but i advise those interested to get the phone at outside shop if u dun wan/cannot upgrade/newline, cos i bought for $468 and trade in my nokia 6610 for $260... haa.. onli pay $208 for the phone... so its quite ok.. cos i now got 40chords ringtone and 65K TFT display.. and ... MY FIRST EVER OWN clamshell (SAMSUNG)phone..

hehehe if u r lucky then u will be a regular customer to samsung service centre... heheheh i use s300 last time and i regret of buying the phone because of the keypad insensitive. send to service centre for 3 times for the sqame problem.
Anyway it's still depend on the person , if u like the phone just go ahead.

actually i like Samsung S200 & S300 is because of the external LED light in the first place...

although S500 dun have that but the TFT LCD .. real true colored panel makes up for it..

blinking light for t610 have ar!!! if ur ringtone is IMY the middle of navigation keys will have red light in rythm or ringtone also the screen and the keypad light will on the rythm mode also, samsung seems dun have send to many lei.. and outgoing sms wont be seen anymore. sms alert for samsung only can use the preloaded one, new upload tone cant be use on sms, but it is indeed very loud. caller groups instead of t610 more personal!!! :)

Screen is bigger for S500.. same as V200 ... TFT is better :)

I dunno abt the rest, but i sold my 6100 n bot e s500... think i got a really gd hp this time, tho' i wasted some time figuring out the settings. haha
1st time samsung hp user la, i guess it's excusable. :p
The TFT screen is really power, no way it can compare wif my previous nokia hp... even my sis' s300 also seem a lv lower. (no offence to s300 users)
s500's bigger screen really stands out among the rest.
N last time while using 6100, dun need to care abt the quality of the pics i use as wallpaper, but now really can see the difference.
starting to choose the better ones only, haa...

as for tone-wise, i guess 40 polyphonic says it all.

having been a nokia user for so long (8210, 3310, 8250, 6510, 6100...) , i wld say e s500 is a really refreshing change, not to mention a really gd one.

yeah, i think it can read and forward chinese, but no chinese input for the current firmware..gonna get my hands on the data cable(or convert my S300 data cable), then hopefully can explore more of the phone..hahah

HI there, I've just (today) bought my first clamshell phone too. I've paid only $46 to get this S500!
I've traded in my N6100 (nokia). Isn't it great?

Anyway, now I am busy surfing around to look for polyphonic ringtones to transfer it into this new phone. ha ha.

for the dl failure of ringtone, u need to check your phone settings... surf around SFC for the info...

and for the points you have used, you can actually tried asking the admin of SFC to reset it for you.

wody, wah seh... u promote for me ah... hahaha yah loh, nokia cannot make it liao... after using 5 nokia's phones since 2000, it's time to look at other brands...

i simply dun believe u get the phone at $46.. cos even if u upgrade ur phone plan or even export sets... there is no such price...

being an ex-nokia user myself, i agree that you won't regret switching from nokia to samsung.

just a few points to note though:

1.i believe (i could be wrong) that s500 does not support chinese sms. so you will not be able to view nor send out chinese sms.

2.the sms system is a tad troublesome to use, but its easy to adapt to. its T9, but you can't add words. at least, not in s500 from what i heard.

3.if you are used to Profile settings in nokia, welcome to the world of only two settings in samsung. the superior nokia software means that samsung has to play lots of catching up in this dept.

P.S. (edit) since i've not had a chance to try this phone, i don't claim the above stuff i've written is 100% correct.

And, having flashed v200 before, i can't say i'm very keen to flash firmware again. i r lazy.

ok, this is true... but fr my own experience till now, i've only need 2 profiles... so it's not really a big deal to me.:D


not saying tat samsung is better in all aspects, it's jus tat each has its own outstanding points.
think the tft screen will not be such a bonus after the newer nokia hps come out... quite a few r also tft, i think.

Well, well, no kidding (nor tua kang).
Here's how it work out:

$228 if you sign brand new (SingTel, 2 yrs contract)
+$88 if your current SingTel contract is over 1 yr but less then 2 yrs (upgrading)

being an ex-nokia user myself, i agree that you won't regret switching from nokia to samsung.

just a few points to note though:

1.i believe (i could be wrong) that s500 does not support chinese sms. so you will not be able to view nor send out chinese sms.

2.the sms system is a tad troublesome to use, but its easy to adapt to. its T9, but you can't add words. at least, not in s500 from what i heard.

3.if you are used to Profile settings in nokia, welcome to the world of only two settings in samsung. the superior nokia software means that samsung has to play lots of catching up in this dept.

P.S. (edit) since i've not had a chance to try this phone, i don't claim the above stuff i've written is 100% correct.

And, having flashed v200 before, i can't say i'm very keen to flash firmware again. i r lazy.

if you compare samsung clamshell phone to tat of nokia, i can confirm tell u nokia can be more durable, cos it depends on how you view it.. nokia phone cover is more solid than samsung... if samsung makes its exterior more solid, den i believe u wont have small and light CLAMSHELL phone. well if u take Z600(SE) .. u will c the different lor.. (my opinion)

**latest info i got is when(if) E700 is launched in singapore, it will cost around 1K, so if you all wish to get it, consider getting the export ones from godaikyoko.

but it's quite convenient lor, cos the infra connection is not like nokia's which will auto switch off after a while.

but one thing hor, the infrared can use up quite a bit of e battery... :p

um, my s500 is on its 2nd battery now... 1st battery lasted me only 2 days plus, cos i use a lot of infrared on e 1st day i got it. :D

for ur info, samsung is using animated file of extension *.abn, as for normal gif file, i dun tink it can be accepted even if thru mms, i dun tink u can set it as wallpaper.

another ting is i no go n try upload and download thru GPRS cos .. guess wat.. the *.abn file is SUPER huge.. the least for 4 image of jpg combined of 128x128 is around 200++ KB , so dun tink wan to waste money go into all these... normal pc will do just fine for now...

cos.. i like to do my own hp wallpaper..instead of going for anywhere on the net... keke

if you know how, you can delete off some frames off an animated GIF file to make it smaller ;)

Guess what I encounter now....I register into SFC using wap...den try to log into the website using mah pc but it does not recognise my id....

I click my forget ID and it prompt me my DOB and my email so I type liao...and it gives me my ID which is the same one that I type in my pc just now to log in....

ok here's my comments on this phone (i also own s500 now).

first off, i like the T9 dictionary and improved symbols. innovative. The colour screen is ok.

now comes the complaints:

1. no power-saving mode. no wonder got ppl commenting on short battery life.

2. still testing the irda and such.. however, once again samsung disappoints with lack of memory status bar. dunno what's the max. no. of images+ringtones you can cram in this phone.

3. no service light.. ok maybe its a plus.. since it does eat battery.

4. no mirror on phone liao. bah.

5. the two directional pads cannot program shortcuts into them, unlike v200..sianz.

overall rating on this phone is 6/10. and this is hardware side only.. i hate to think of the software issue..

oh yeah forgot one important no-no.

s500 cannot accept/receive nokia picture sms. (v200 can) >.<

EDIT: i've downloaded the EasyStudio successfully.

Also noticed that s500 uses 128 x 126 pixels images.

if you do not mms, do not download stuff (hence no need for java) and do not play games, then s500 can be rated 8/10. nice screen, ok ringtones, small and light. antenna not very long too.

yeah, circumstances forced my hand. (well, actually i decided i had enough).

i resigned from my job with immediate effect yesterday.. and because i need to return my sim card (plus the nokia 3315 which my mom was using) back to the company today, i was forced to make a snap decision (i.e. i needed a new sim card + phone).

so i went to Hello! Singtel shop to look-see. oh, its $238 if you trade in v200.. but i didn't want to. hence i got the s500 with a singtel classic (2 yrs) plan at $438.

I suppose, if you do not need all the java/games/mms, well.. i agree that despite my comments, i would say that s500 is good value for money (overall).

the v200 has the ability to switch off the main screen backlight .. unlike s500. oh the screen will be off 15 seconds later when idle (can be set), but that's not what i'm talking about.

What i am saying, is that when you flip the phone open, the v200 can be configured such that the keypad backlight does NOT come on at all.

hmm. also i think this has been mentioned before.. in v200, you have the option NOT to answer the call immediately when you flip open the phone. This option doesn't seem to exist in s500 too.

what i like about s500 is the ability to read and forward chinese sms, tft screen and the short and flat antenna, sometimes find my s300's antenna a bit long, but i'm used to it liao... hahaha

i agree. ability to read chinese sms is a plus.

What irritates me is the INABILITY to input chinese, and also no animated gif files.

Plus i have to convert some of my static gif files to jpeg format.. bah. and only max. 8 pictures (but i believe its probably either unlimited file size, or maybe restricted to 60K per wallpaper? .. anyway i squeezed in a 50k+ pic, and a few images which range between 45k to 60k..)

also, the default ringtones, though now can be deleted, the max. can be stored in s500 is only 12 ringtones.

well, that's ok with me, since i lazy to shift all my phonebook entries from card to phone anyway (i'll live without caller group).

nokia 7250 - from me to my dad, now my mom.

no prob.. i'm just comparing my observations of my s500 against the specs i saw at www.gsmarena.com

also just found out that, while its cool to be able to change font size, make the sms text bold, in italics, change its alignment, etc. one feature which i've taken for granted has gone missing..

..the missing function is the ability to insert phone book entries into sms - meaning, you must key in the number manually. a bit troublesome.

if i'm not wrong, you can't decide where u want to save your sms to which memory...

my s300 saves to phone memory automatically... if you want to shift your sms from sim to hp, u have to do it via easyGPRS

ah yes.. i've got the game. but cannot play, because of some buggy programming i think. my laptop cd-rom drive is "D" but spoilt. so i installed the game using my external cd-rom drive "e". but the copy protection insists looking at drive "d" for the game disc. bah. Its now with my friend for testing.. *mutters*

anyway, back to topic: i also dunno. the 80MB file is the one i got from samsung fun club. -shrug- perhaps the easystudio package i've downloaded comes with the image editor and lots of samples.. (notice the three setup.exe)

me hor... lagi pek chek when think abt the SFC...coz I register SFC thru wap den when try to log into SFC using my desktop...the toopid thing cannot recognise my ID.... but when I check my ID using my DOB....the same ID that I used to register thru wap came out.... nah i don't think so. the 80MB version is the EasyStudio, plus an additional Image Editor program, plus an utility program which installs some sample pics and ringtones to the PC.

The dumb thing is that the central setup file does not work. i had to dig into the sub-directories and manually install the programs individually.

In addition, when i try to run Image Editor from EasyStudio, i get a nice and warm error message )buffer overrun error(. Then when i start it up (without rebooting my PC) in the windows explorer, it works! *mutters*

hmm.. haven't figured out how to create .ABN files for EasyStudio.. oh well, three frames of animation's just pathetic.. even worse than EasyGPRS's 4 frame limit.. i shan't bother.

i created the *.abm without phone connected to the PC, using EasyStudio... but S300 doesn't support *.abm if i'm not wrong... :( that is why easyGPRS is not creating

nope. EasyGPRS does not support .ABM (in my previous post i wrongly typed as .ABN) files.

as i said, i give up. no point creating moving pics with 3 frames or less.

erm, i know Keropi is using infra-red to send stuff to their S500...

u can get infra-red port at sim lim square for a price less than $50.

IMO, better to use infra-red, cos u can use it for other phones which has the infra-red port too. :)

yeah once you have the infra-red device properly set up, go to samsung fun club, log in, then look for the s500 manual. download the EasyStudio program (its around 80mb, so if you're on dial-up.. :sweat: )

open up the zip file once downloaded, and install accordingly.

And no, one thing sucks on all current samsung phones available in sg, INCLUDING s500, is that there is NO WAY you can transfer ringtones/images from one phone to another phone. Not possible.

Infra red only used for transferring stuff (wallpaper pics 128x128 pixels, although it will become resized down to 128x126 pixels) and ringtones.

For the s500, the max. no. of pictures downloadable from either wap or Easystudio is 08 pics, and 12 ringtones.. beyond that the program will prompt you if you want to delete existing stuff.

i have 39MB and 80MB versions (which i download for fun... :p ), the one you are toking are in fact part of the 80MB version, which probably they have split it up, since not everyone uses all the programs given. :)

i'm not so sure whether u can infra from S500 to PC or not... maybe u want to read the help file given in the program?

yah i agree on that... the help file talk so much abt this and that, then end up on my S300 never works... and there's no mentioning of program/function compatibility for phone whatsoever, made user to go thru' unneccessary trial and error... which is somehow we learnt too... :D

u cannot purchase the points... what u can do is to play the quiz and if u got the answer, u will have 5 points...

blinking light for t610 have ar!!! if ur ringtone is IMY the middle of navigation keys will have red light in rythm or ringtone also the screen and the keypad light will on the rythm mode also, samsung seems dun have send to many lei.. and outgoing sms wont be seen anymore. sms alert for samsung only can use the preloaded one, new upload tone cant be use on sms, but it is indeed very loud. caller groups instead of t610 more personal!!! :)
